On Friday, January 19th, 2018, the team at Potrero Hills Landfill in Fairfield, California saw a small brown dog running around the dump in the rain. She was bedraggled, skinny, and scared, and was eating garbage to survive. After several unsuccessful attempts to catch her, they finally lured the abandoned dog into the office using lunch meat and cheese. The moment Marcus, a civil engineer at the landfill, saw those big brown eyes he was in love.
FIG was adopted by Marcus, a civil engineer who specializes in garbage. A volunteer ski patroller, avid hiker, water lover, and big kid at heart, Marcus is the perfect fit for FIG’s quirky personality.
Morgan first saw FIG when Marcus texted her a photo of the sad little dog at the landfill and immediately fell in love. Morgan is a writer by day and the author of FIG the Garbage Dog. In her spare time, she is a search and rescue volunteer and an outdoor junkie.
Born in late 2021, Hunter has known the joy that is FIG for her entire life. While FIG is a sweet soul, Morgan and Marcus are working to make sure that Hunter learns how to safely and gently interact with FIG and other animals.
Morgan and Marcus adopted Harriet in October 2022 from Rez Dog Rescue, a Montana-based pet rescue organization. Playful and vocal, Harriet and FIG play together regularly. When Harriet’s play becomes harassment, FIG retreats to the safety of Morgan and Marcus’ bed.
